Coco fiber is common because it is light and holds moisture, but it needs suitable processing, blending, and particle size. Material that is too fine can compact; material that is too coarse may not hold enough water for young roots.
Plants respond differently to the same medium. Thin-leaved foliage needs more even moisture, while plants exposed to sun need faster drainage after rain.
Moisture Retention Affects Work After Handover
Balanced moisture reduces local plant replacement. When the medium compacts, decomposes, or holds odor, the care team needs to replace that plant group rather than only add water. Persistent damp odor at the base calls for inspection of the tray and material behind the leaves.
Installation should include a water test with the real growing medium. Looking at the frame and emitters alone does not show how the planted wall will operate.
Why Ordinary Potting Soil Does Not Work

In real operation, plant species, substrate type and irrigation regime interact to determine how the wall performs — meaning substrate cannot be chosen on its own. It has to be settled alongside the planting and the watering rhythm, which is why a garden mix copied onto a vertical surface usually fails.
